UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
GEORGE SHUTTLEWORTH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J. W. ANDERSON.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY TIPS FOR BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,5 25, dated August 25, 1874; application filed To all whom 'it may concern r Be it known that I, GEORGE SHUTTLE- WORTH, of Springfield, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Rotary Boot and Shoe Heels, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in rotary tips for boot or shoe heels; and it consists of a plate secured by screws to the heel of a boot or shoe, to which plate is pivoted .a circular disk provided .with an annular flange at the rim, forming a recess on the lower side, which is filled with leather, said disk being also provided with a pin on its upper side,
which entersany one of a series of holes made in the plate, and secures the disk in the de sired position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through line A, and Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the same.
B represents the plate, which is provided with holes a 0, through which screws are inserted, to secure it to the heel of the boot or shoe. Said plate is also provided with a central-threaded hole, shown at b in Fig. 3, and also a series of smaller holes, 6 c, equidistant from the threaded hole I). The disk F is provided with an annular flange, E, projecting downward, allaround, at the rim of the disk,
l the space inclosed by the flange being filled with leather D or other suitable material,
which is firmly secured to the disk by the rivets a. The disk has upon the upper side a pin, f, which, when the disk is. secured to the plate, is inserted into any one of the holes 6, and the disk is fastened by the screw b. As thus arranged, the plate B is secured to the boot or shoe heel, and when one side of the December 31, 1873.
walking, and prevents the flange from being worn off so fast as it would without the filling, and it also takes a better hold of ice and snow than metal, and prevents slipping to a certain degree, although, if desirable, the wearer may remove the disk entirely, and turn it the other side out, securing it again by the screw. As thus attached, the head of the screw (not having'any recess in the disk to enter) will project beyond the face of the disk, and will, in connection with the projecting" pin f, serve as a creeper to prevent slipping upon the ice.
I am aware that rotary heels have heretofore been made and used wherein pins with entering-holes were used to assist in securing the disk in place, and I do not claim that feature, either in itself or with the screw b and I am also aware that a disk has been used provided with rubber on one or both sides, and I do not claim that feature in itself; but
Having described my invention, what I do claim as myimprovement is- As a new article of manufacture, the plate B, provided with the screw-.hole b and the holes 6, arranged in the circumference of a circle, of which the screw-hole b is the center, in combination with the disk F, provided with the annular-flange E, the pin f, the filling D riveted thereto, and the pivot-screw b, as herein set forth.
GEORGE SHUTTLEWORTH.
