UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATWOOD OROSBY, OF WATERVfLLE, MAINE.
IMPROVEM ENT IN AX-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,605, dated June 17, 1879; application filed January 29, 1879.
erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of drawings shows a perspective view of my device, with the cover partly raised and an ax in position, with outline partly broken to show the construction ofthe pocket. Fig. 2 shows longitudinal section through .r a; of Fig. 1, with cover closed and ax in position, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows, in reduced scale, the ax in its case and suspended from a belt.
My inventio consists of an ax case or pocket of some tough and rigid material, as iron or sole-leather, and so constructed that the ax may be easily and conveniently placed in its case, and secured by the closing of a cover, or by similar means. It is, in general, designed as an improvement on those ax-pockets in ordinary use which are made of pliable leather, and which afford no protection for the sharp edge of an ax.`
A A represent the body of the case, made to conform to the shape of the ax, and having an aperture, A', in its side, through which the handle of the ax passes. B is a cover, joined to the case A by the hinges O C. D E are the parts of a catch or fastening,. by which the cover is secured when down. This fastening may be of any desirable form or kind. Gis a ring attached to the case, by which it is suspended, for convenience in carrying. F is an ax in position in the case A.
H is the ax-handle.
The manner of using my invention is as follows, viz: The cover B being raised, the ax is placed in position, as shown, and the cover is then closed over it, and fastened in place by a spring-catch or other suitable means.
The ax in this position is secured for convenience in carrying and handling, its edge being lkept from touching the end of the case by the bearing of the handle H against the side 1 of the apertnre A'. p
In lieu of the cover B, a stout hinged locking-bar or other device might be substituted with the same effect, since the principal object of the cover is to act, in connection with the bearing of the handle H on the aperture A', in holding the ax in place in the pocket.
As thus made, a very safe and efficient device is produced in which an ax may be carried, and which will at same time preserve its edge from being dulled, and also prevent accident. It is obvious that in many ways the mere detail in making the said pocket may be varied, but yet retain fully all the essential points of my invention-namely, an ax-pocket of rigid materials, conibrming in shape to the blade of the ax, and kept from its edge by bearing against the handle.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- I l. The ax case or pocket A, with cover B, hinges C O, fastening D E, and ring G, substantially as set forth.
2. An ax case or pocket, A, of rigid material, and having a side aperture, Al, for the ax-handle, and a suitable hin ged locking-cover or retaining-bar, B, substantially as described and shown.
3. An ax case or pocket provided with a side opening of shape and size to hold the ax-handle, and having a hinged locking cover or bar to retain the ax in fixed position in the pocket, substantially as described.
4. An ax-pocket composed of rigid materials, and conforming in vshape to the blade ofthe ax, and kept from the ax-edge by bearing against the handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ATVVOOD GROSBY.
