This invention relates to a combination shipping carton and floor display stand.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination shipping carton and display stand made out of corrugated paper, straw board or similar sheet material wherein a display arrangement for the packaged items is foldable out of one end of the carton and wherein the foldable portions are integrally united by foldable connections at the corners and wherein the portion which is made horizontal to support the packaged items is connected and supported from one side and as well from two ends thereof.

It is another object of the invention to provide a shipping carton having foldable portions at one end thereof which can be easily and readily expanded from the body of the carton and collapsed in part to provide the dis lay space and wherein by the insertion of a display extension having a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, the folded-out side end portions can be held in place against inward displacement and whereby toform a self-supporting display stand which will not collapse as the full contents of the carton are disposed thereon.

Other obiects of the invention are to provide a combined shipping carton and floor dis lay stand formed of foldable sheet portions, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, rugged and durable, has a rigid and. attractive display arran ement when extended. easy to assemble with packaged contents, permits removal of the contents of the carton without in ury to the display portions of the carton, easy to reassemble as a dis lay stand and eificient in use.

For other obiects and for a better understanding of the invention. reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carton dis-' posed in an inverted manner and showing how the bottom flaps are folded and sealed, once the contents has been disposed therein;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the box with the contents and with the accessory expansible inner support and display stand extension parts also disposed within the carton;

Fig. 3 is a collective and perspective view of the carton opened from its bottom and the contents discharged on the floor removed therefrom, the sealing strips having been pulled in a manner illustrated in Fig. 1 relative to relieving the carton of its contents;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the carton which has been emptied and in which the internal collapsible support has been extended and adapted for use, the flaps being in their open positions and adapted to be folded to provide a supporting bottom for the stand;

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the carton after the internal support has been expanded therein and the bottom flaps folded inwardly, the carton now resting upon the bottom flaps and showing the sealing strips being removed from the display stand portions of the carton;

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the manner in which the display stand portions are folded inwardly at one side of the carton and prior to the same being lifted to provide the display stand space;

Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on line 1-! of Fig. 6

Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the display stand portions being lifted from the box end and being folded outwardly into their vertical positions;

Fig. 12 is a fragmentary perspective view looking upon one end of the display arrangement with all portions thereof folded out to permit the carton to be filled with its contents or to be removed therefrom.

Referring now to the figures, l5 represents a shipping carton having a front wall It, a rear wall I? and side end walls I l and I8. On the bottom of the carton are front and rear flaps l9 and 2B and side end flaps 2! and 22. These flaps are held when folded inwardly by end sealing strips 23 and 24 and an intermediate sealing strip 25 extending between the front and rear flaps, Fig. 1.

On the top of the carton, there is a folded-in display stand arrangement indicated generally at 25. This display stand arrangement 23 is held by side end sealing strips 21 and .28 and by a front edge sealing strip 29. This arrangement will be hereinafter described more in detail.

Besides the carton #5, there is provided for shipment therewith an expansible interior support 3! comprising interlocked supporting members expansible to extend between the front and rear walls of the carton, Figs. 3 and i. Also, there is placed in the carton a display stand eX- tension 32, Figs. 3 and 10, which is used with the display stand arrangement to hold the portions thereof in their extended and raised positions in a manner hereinafter described. lhe interior expansible support 3! and the display stand extension 28 are folded and disposed in the carton in the manner as shown in Fig. 2, along with small boxes 53 bearing the goods to be shipped and displayed. All of these items may be placed in the carton. eitb er through the bottom thereof or through the top thereof on the display stand arrangement being folded outwardly.

The display stand arran ement 23 comprises front and rear folda le portions 34 and 35 and interconnected foldable side end portions 36 and 31. The front portion 34 is connected to the foldable side end portions 36 and 3! respectively along scored or fold lines 38 and. 39. The front portion 34 serves when the portions are ad usted for displa purposes as the support for the packa ed goods 33. The side ends of the support portion 34 are thus united as at 3 and 39 with folded inside end portions 35 and 3! so that not only is this supportin portion 3d supported along its fold. line :38 at the front of the carton, but also at the ends as at 38 and 39 whereby this folded front supporting portion 34 will be suspended. from the fol ed s de end ortions 35 and u 31 and connected at the fold line 40 with the front carton wall It.

In order to give ri idity to the unconnected edge indicated at M of the support n portion 34 there is provided a downwardly turned lip M, Fig. 11. This will stiffen the ed e i! of the supporting portion This lip 42 being connected at its ends to the folded side portions 36 and 3'! thereby serves in truss fashion to support the ed e M of the supporting portion 34 from the ends of the lip and from the foldable side end portions 36 and 31.

The folded side end portions 36 and 31 respectively have an inclined fold. line 43 that allows the front supporting portion 35 to be dropped into its horizontal posit on shown in Fi 9. Thereafter, in order to collapse rear flap portion 35 the side end portions are folded alon median fold line 44 extendin normal to the inclined fold line 43 and to the bottom corner of the rear portion 35.

The side end portions 36 and 3'! are cut. as indicated at 4-5, to provide freedom so that the inner si e part of the fol ed side end po tion can be easily brou ht into proper position along the outer side of the sid end rti n. In order to give support to the display arrangement and to the side end portions when these portions are folded, the display extension 32 is seated with its bottom portion 5| on the supporting portion 34 and its upri ht portion 52 lying against the rear display portion 35. The edges of the upright portion 52 thereof will bear against the inner edges 43 and 49 of the respective inner side members .6 and 41 to hold them against inward collapse.

In order to alter the shipping carton for use as a display device, the carton is first unloaded and from the bottom thereof the bottom is then closed. The display arrangement is lifted and the internal support 3| is expanded in the manner as shown in Fig. 4. Thereafter, the display arran ement is made to assume the position shown in Fig. 9 by lifting it in the direction indicated in Fig. 8. The side end portions 36 and 31 having been folded, they are merely folded out while leaving the portion 34 in the down and supporting position. The upright extension 32 is put in place, as shown in Fig. 10 to brace the members 46 and 41 against inward displacement. Thereafter, the packa ed items 33 can be loaded upon the bottom 5| of the display extension 32. The extension bottom 5| and the supporting portion 34 and the expanded internal support 3| will give adequate support for the packaged items.

It should now be apparent that there has been provided a combination shipping carton and display stand which will have adequate support when the display stand end has been lifted and made ready to receive the packaged goods.

While various changes may be made in the detailed construction. it shall be understood that such chan es shall be within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A display stand comprising a hollow body having front, rear and side end walls and a foldable top and display arrangement having front, rear and side end portions respectively foldably connected to the respective and corresponding front, rear and side end wall of the hollow body along horizontal fold lines and foldably connected to one another, each of the side end portions folded inwardly on itself along an inclined fold line xtending between the horizontal fold line of the front portion and the upper edge of the rear portion, said front portion being folded inwardly and lying in a horizontal supporting position, each of the side end portions having a cut extending from its outer edge to the inclined fold line and providing two members one above the other, and a median fold line extending from the inclined fold line at the end of the cut to the bottom of the rear portion, whereby to permit the inward folding of the side end portions and the downward collapse of the rear portion.

A display stand comprising a hollow body having front, rear and side end walls and a foldable top display arrangement having front, rear and side end portions respectively foldably connected to the respective and corresponding front, rear and side end wall of the hollow body along horizontal fold lines and foldably connected to one another, each of the side end portions folded inwardly on itself along an inclined fold line extending between the horizontal fold line of the front portion and the upper edge of the rear portion, said front portion being folded inwardly and lying in a, horizontal supporting position, each of the side end portions having a cut extending from its outer edge to the inclined fold line and providing two members one above the other, a median fold line extending from the inclined fold line at the end of the out therewith to the bottom of the rear portion and a fold line extending diagonally through bottom member of the side portion upwardly and rearwardly from the bottom of the front portion to outer edge of the member whereby to facilitate the inward folding of the side end portions and the front portion between horizontal and supporting positions.

A display stand comprising a hollow body having front, rear and side end walls and a foldable top display arrangement having front, rear and side end portions respectively foldably connected to the respective and corresponding front, rear and side end wall of the hollow body along horizontal fold lines and foldably connected to each other, each of the side end portions folded inwardly on itself along an inclined fold line extending between the horizontal fold line of the front portion and the upper edge of the rear portion, said front portion being folded inwardly and lying in a horizontal supporting position, each of the side end portions having a cut extending from its outer edge to the inclined fold line and providing two members one above the other, a median fold line extending from the inclined fold line at the end of the cut therewith to the bottom of the rear portion and a fold line extending diagonally through the bottom member of the side portion upwardly and rearwardly from the bottom of the front portion to the outer edge of the member, and a display extension fitted into said display space and having a horizontal portion overlying the folded in front portion and a vertical portion bearing against the rear portion with its side edges engaging with the side portions whereby to hold the same against inward flexure.

4. A combined shipping carton and display stand comprising a generally square or rectangular conventional carton body having front, rear and side Walls, bottom closure flaps hingedly connected to the respective side walls and 6 foldable thereover to provide a bottom closure for the carton body, combined top closure and display flaps hingedly connected to the respective front, rear and side walls of the carton body, said front and rear flaps being unbroken and hingedly connected at their opposite sides to the side flaps, each of said side panels having a forty-five degree fold line extending from the front bottom corner to the rear top corner of the connected flaps and another forty-five degree fold line extending normal to the first forty-five degree fold line to the bottom rear corner and a cut extending vertically from the meeting point of the forty-five degree fold lines to the top edge of the side flap and another fold line extending from the lower front corner to the top edge of the side flap and bisecting the side portion between the first forty-five degree fold line and the vertical connection of the side with the front portion, whereby the display flaps act as a closure for shipping and as a holding platform for display of merchandise.
