Application March 21, 1955, Serial No. 495,410
1 Claim. (Cl. 128-290) This invention is an improvement in pads and means for retaining a pad in position, and particularly catamenial pads and holding means therefor.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a catamenial pad that can be secured to the person of the wearer beneath the outer clothing Without being connected to a belt or girdle and without mechanical attaching devices such as hooks, buttons, loops or other elements in common use for fastening purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a pad that is simple, effective and convenient, and adapted to be easily put in its intended place and Worn comfortably till the need therefore is no longer present.
The nature and advantages of the invention are clearly set forth herein and the characteristics of the improvement are defined in the claim. On the accompanying drawings I illustrate a preferred embodiment of the improvement, but variations in minor respects may be made without materially altering or omitting any of the essential features by which the invention is distinguished.
On said drawings,
Figure 1 is a bottom view of a catamenial pad according to my invention;
Figure 2 is a side view thereof in section, taken centrally along Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional detail- The body of the pad is indicated at 1. The material thereof is absorbent, and of the required length, breadth and thickness, to fit easily on the part of the body to which it is applied. The body has a cover 2 of porous material such as mesh cloth or tissue paper, which is wrapped upon the core or body 1 and its edges overlap in two or more layers, the underlying edge portion being indicated at 3 and the overlying'edge portion being indicated at 4.
ice
2 Preferably the cover is longer than the body and its ends are open. Along the overlapped edges I attach a strip 5, with adhesive on both faces, and upon this strip is laid a cover strip 6.
The strips 5 and 6 are of nearly equal length and about as long as the cover 2. The adhesive on the inner face of the strip 5 makes contact with the cover along the overlapping edges 3 and 4, and prevents separation of said edges, thus binding the cover along its length. The adhesive on the outer face of the strip 5 is overlaid by the strip 6, and the handling of the pad is thus facilitated.
When the pad is required, the cover strip 6, which may protrude a little beyond the strip 5 at one end, as at 7, is pulled off and the pad is then disposed in place, with the face of the pad bearing the strip 5 lowermost.
The exposed adhesive on the outer face engages the wearers panties, slip or other undergarment inside and nothing more is necessary to maintain the pad where it is required till it can be finally discarded. The two layers of adhesive on the strip 5 are indicated at 8 in Figure 7.
The utility of the improvement is therefore quite apparent. The pad does not have to be united to the wearers belt or girdle with pins or any other type of fastener because the strip 5 sticks to the undergarment and prevents displacement until the necessity for its use is ended.
The ends of the cover are closed by pressure when the article is worn. 7
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
A catamenial pad comprising an absorbent body, a porous cover therefor enclosing the body, the cover having longitudinal overlapping edges, the ends of the cover extending beyond the ends of the body, a strip having adhesive on its entire inner face engaging the cover along the full length of said edges to secure the cover upon the body, said strip having adhesive on the Whole of its outer face also, and a second strip as long as the aforesaid strip covering to the outer face of the first-named strip, said second strip being removable so that the adhesive strip will attach itself to the wearers clothing.
