This invention relates to a novel remover for lids of such as vacuum jars.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a more efficient, and easier to use device of the kind indicated, which avoids excessive deformation of jar lids so that the lids can be replaced on jars, after removal, and serve to effectively close the jars.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a simple and low cost device of the character indicated above which can be readily formed from a single lbla-nk of metal or other suitable material.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent trom the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, tor purposes of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a device of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view thereof, showing the device applied to a jar lid, shown in phantom lines;
FIGURE 4 is a side elevation showing the device applied to the lid of a jar, and showing, in phantom lines, engagement of the hook beneath and behind the rim of the lid;
FIGURE 5 is a plan view of the blank from :which the device is adapted to be formed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the illustrated device, generally designated 10, comprises a preferably cylindrical tubular split handle 12, an underpart 14 of whose sidewall extends forwardly trout the torward end of the handle, and merges, at its forward edge, into an upstanding transversely elongated arcua-te pressure bar 16, which extends laterally from either end of the part 14. In height, the pressure bar 16, as shown in FIGURE 3, is preferably slightly shorter than the diameter of the handle 12.
As shown in FIGURES 2 and 4, the right-hand arm 18 of the pressure bar 16 is uumutilated, while the upper part of the end of the left-hand arm 20 thereof is reduced in length, as indicated at 22, and the lower part thereof is formed into an upwardly and longitudinally outwardly curved hook 24. The hook 24, as shown in FIGURE 2, is angled forwardly relative to the left-hand arm 20.
The forward face of the pressure bar 16 is lined with a resilient and compressible liner 26, which serves to provide a non-slip grip on the flange or rim 28 of a jar lid 30, and to accommodate the device to jar lids of diiferent diameters. To the latter end, the pressure bar 16 is preferably flexible enough to conformably engage the rim of jar lids of dilfere-nt diameters.
The device is adapted to be formed from a single T-shaped blank B, shown in FIGURE 5, which can be die-cut from sheet material, in one operation. The blank B comprises a main elongated rectangular standard portion '32, having, on one end thereof, a centered reducedwidth and relatively shallow neck 34, having concavely curved ends 36, which has, on its outer edge, a transversely elongated cross head portion 88 which extends beyond the 3,178,978 Patented Apr. 20, 1965 side edges of the main portion 32. The port-ion 38 has a longitudinally and inwardly bowed inner edge 40, a longitudinally and outwardly bowed outer edge 42, substantially paralleling the inner edge 40. The portion 38 has a squared right-hand end 44, and its left-hand end is cut away to define the hook 24.
From the blank B the device 10 is formed by rolling the sides of the main portion 32 upwardly and nw y, toward each other until the side edges 46 thereof meet, at the top of the handle 12. Then, or simultaneously with the formation of the handle 12, the portion 38 is bent upwardly at right angles along the line indicated at 48, and given its conca-vo-convex curvature.
In use, the device 10 is applied to a lid 30 having a pendant flange or rim 28, for removing the lid from a jar J, by forcing the hook 24 upwardly between the neck 52 of the jar and the rim 28, so as to break the vacuum seal between the lid and the jar, while placing the pressure bar 16 around the outer surface of the rim 28. With the liner 26 in contact with the outer surfiace of the lid rim 28, the user of the device then exerts suflicieut upward pressure and pressure toward the lid rim to cause the lid to rise off the jar and/ or to rotate the lid, relative to the jar, to remove the lid from the jar.
Although there has been shown and described a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
1. A jar lid remover comprising a flat arcuate pressure bar, a radial handle fixed to and extending from the convex side of the pressure bar, and an upwardly directed hook on the pressure bar, at one side of the handle, said pressure bar having upper and lower edges, said hook being located at one end of the pressure bar and spaced downwardly from its upper edge, and being angled outwardly beyond the concave side of the pressure bar.

A jar lid remover comprising a fiat arcuate pressure bar having a concave side adapted to be conformably engaged with the rim of a jar lid, said pressure bar having a convex side and upper and lower edges, and ends, and a handle extending from said convex side of the pressure bar, said handle being connected to the lower edge of the pressure bar at a point intermediate the ends of the pressure bar, one end of the pressure bar being partially reduced to define a longitudinally outwardly and radially inwardly angled hook.

Claims (1)
1. A JAR LID REMOVER COMPRISING A FLAT ARCUATE PRESSURE BAR, A RADIAL HANDLE FIXED TO AND EXTENDING FROM THE CONVEX SIDE OF THE PRESSURE BAR, AND AN UPWARDLY DIRECTED HOOK ON THE PRESSURE BAR, AT ONE SIDE OF THE HANDLE, SAID PRESSURE BAR HAVING UPPER AND LOWER EDGES, SAID HOOK BEING LOCATED AT ONE END OF THE PRESSURE BAR AND SPACED DOWNWARDLY FROM ITS UPPER EDGE, AND BEING ANGLED OUTWARDLY BEYOND THE CONCAVE SIDE OF THE PRESSURE BAR.
