Abstract
A cylinder structure with a forced cooling fluid system and with a dry cylinder bushing for a water or air-cooled piston internal combustion, in which that upper cylinder block portion which is adjacent the cylinder head has annular passage means surrounding the cylinder bore defined by the cylinder block or by a bushing therein while feeding and discharge passage means establish communication between said annular passage means and said cooling fluid system.

6 Claims, 1 Drawing Figure CYLINDER WITH DRY CYLINDER SLEEVE The present invention relates to a cylinder with dry cylinder sleeve for water-cooled piston internal combustion engines.
With internal combustion engines of the above mentioned type, for instance water-cooled internal combustion engines, in which the relatively strong cover plate of the cylinder block and the parts containing the screw holes are cast onto the cover plate and arranged around the cylinder bore for connection with the cylinder head, the cooling water chamber or jacket must more or less be set back from the zone of greatest heat development, i.e. from the upper part of the cylinder block or the cylinder bushing. As a result thereof, a relatively poor cooling of this portion of the cylinder is obtained whereby different heat expansions occur between the cover plate and the lower portion of the cylinder block. The thus resulting temperature stresses bring about the well known ovalizing of the upper portion of the cylinder and the cylinder bushing so as to interfere with the geometry of the cylinder bore.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide means by which the distortion of the cylinder block or the ovalizing of the cylinder bores caused by the above referred to reasons will be avoided also when employing dry cylinder bushings.
This object and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a section through the upper portion of a cylinder block with the arrangement according to the present invention and a portion of the cylinder head.
The cylinder according to the present invention provided with a dry cylinder bushing for water-cooled or air-cooled piston internal combustion engines is characterized primarily in that the upper portion of the cylinder bore which is provided in the cylinder block and is adjacent to the cylinder head or the upper portion of the cylinder bushing has one or more annular passages extending in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder, and is furthermore characterized in that the annular passages respectively communicate through a feeding line and a discharge line with a circulating cooling oil system.
This arrangement makes possible an increased heat withdrawal from that portion of the cylinder block and the cylinder bushing which are not or only unsatisfactorily surrounded and cooled by the cooling medium. In addition thereto, depending on the entrance temperature and the quantity of the cooling oil, it will be possible to cool the thermally most stressed portion of the cylinder block in an aimed manner which means to withdraw from this portion such a quantity of heat that the temperature stresses will be completely equalized. Depending on the magnitude of the section to be cooled, the number of the annular passages will vary.
For purposes of controlling the cooling effect, it is suggested to install an adjustable throttling device in the feeding lines for the cooling oil. As cooling oil expediently a motor lubricant is employed so that a separate circulating system will not be necessary.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the arrangement shown therein comprises a cylinder block 1 and gasket 3 interposed between the cylinder block and the cylinder head 2. The cylinder block 1 has a cylinder bore 4 having inserted therein a cylinder bushing 6 the upper portion of which is provided with a collar 5. The upper portion of the cylinder block 1 is formed by a relatively strong cover plate 7 having cast thereon around the cylinder bore 4 a number of eyes 8 with bores for the connecting screws to connect the cylinder head 2 to the cylinder block 1. The cooling water chambers provided in the cylinder block 1 and in the cylinder head 2 are designated with the reference numerals 9, 9a. The upper portion of the cylinder bore 4 which is adjacent to the cylinder head 2 has an annular passage 10 extending all the way around which through a feeding line 11 and a discharge line 12 communicates with a non-illustrated circulating system for the cooling oil. In an analogous manner, the collar 5 of the cylinder bushing 6 is provided with an annular passage 13 communicating with a feeding line 14 and a discharge line 15. A throttling device 16 illustrated only diagrammatically is arranged in the feeding lines 11 and 14 for controlling the quantity of oil passing therethrough.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular showing in the drawing but also comprises any modifications within the scope of the appended claims. Thus, while the device shown in the drawing comprises only two annular passages 10 and 13, it is also possible to provide a greater number, for instance three or four, of annular passages depending on the size of the section to be cooled and the heat to be withdrawn per time unit.
What we claim is:
l. A cylinder-piston internal combustion engine with a forced oil circulation cooling system for the engine and an engine lubricating system, which includes: a cylinder block having at least one cylinder bore and adapted for cooling therewith, a cylinder head mounted on said cylinder block and adapted for cooling the same as for said cylinder block, that end portion of each said cylinder bore which is adjacent said cylinder head respectively being provided with at least one independent annular passage means, a dry cylinder bushing installed for each respective cylinder bore and having an outer periphery thereof engaging complementary to said cylinder block directly throughout the interrelationship therebetween, and feeding and discharge conduit means communicating only with said passage means and connectable to said cooling system circumcirculation in direct relationship to said dry cylinder bushing.
2. An engine according to claim 1, in which said passage means communicates exclusively with said en gine lubricating system.
3. An engine according to claim 2, which includes throttling means interposed in said feeding conduit means of said cooling system.
4. An engine according to claim 1, in which said dry cylinder bushing is mounted in said cylinder block and defines said cylinder bore, and in which said annular passage means are at least partially defined by said bushing and said cylinder block.

An engine according to claim 1, in which said dry cylinder bushing is inserted in said cylinder block and defines said cylinder bore, said cylinder bushing having that end portion thereof which is adjacent said cylinder head provided with an outer circumferential collar with 6. Claims (6)
1. A cylinder-piston internal combustion engine with a forced oil circulation cooling system for the engine and an engine lubricating system, which includes: a cylinder block having at least one cylinder bore and adapted for cooling therewith, a cylinder head mounted on said cylinder block and adapted for cooling the same as for said cylinder block, that end portion of each said cylinder bore which is adjacent said cylinder head respectively being provided with at least one independent annular passage means, a dry cylinder bushing installed for each respective cylinder bore and having an outer periphery thereof engaging complementary to said cylinder block directly throughout the interrelationship therebetween, and feeding and discharge conduit means communicating only with said passage means and connectable to said cooling system circumcirculation in direct relationship to said dry cylinder bushing.

A cylinder-piston internal combustion engine with a forced oil circulation cooling system for the engine and an engine lubricating system, which includes: a cylinder block having at least one cylinder bore and adapted for cooling therewith, a cylinder head mounted on said cylinder block and adapted for cooling the same as for said cylinder block, that end portion of each said cylinder bore which is adjacent said cylinder head respectively being provided with at least one independent annular passage means, a dry cylinder bushing installed for each respective cylinder bore and having an outer periphery thereof engaging complementary to said cylinder block directly throughout the interrelationship therebetween, and feeding and discharge conduit means communicating only with said passage means and connectable to said cooling system circumcirculation in direct relationship to said dry cylinder bushing.
2. An engine according to claim 1, in which said passage means communicates exclusively with said engine lubricating system.
3. An engine according to claim 2, which includes throttling means interposed in said feeding conduit means of said cooling system.
4. An engine according to claim 1, in which said dry cylinder bushing is mounted in said cylinder block and defines said cylinder bore, and in which said annular passage means are at least partially defined by said bushing and said cylinder block.
5. An engine according to claim 1, in which said dry cylinder bushing is inserted in said cylinder block and defines said cylinder bore, said cylinder bushing having that end portion thereof which is adjacent said cylinder head provided with an outer circumferential collar with a peripheral passage thErein defining said annular passage means, said collar forming part of the passage in supporting said dry cylinder bushing in the cylinder bore at the peripheral passage location.
