J. P. HAYGOOD, MUSTAGHE PROTECTOR.
No. 586,268. Patented July 13, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. HAYGOOD, OF l/VATKINSVILLE, GEORGIA.
lVl USTACH E-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,268, dated July 13, 1837.
Application filed December 22, 1896. Serial No.616,629. (No model.)
To .roZZ whom it may; concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. HAYGOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vatkinsville, in the county of Oconee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a mustache-protector; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts hereinafter set out in this specification and the claims hereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention secured to a glass tumbler. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
1 is a plate of metal or other material extending from one edge 2 to the other edge 3 of the glass or cup. In the front edge of said plate is a recess 4:, through which the liquid enters the mouth while the mustache is held back from contact with the liquid in the plate 1. This plate 1 is manufactured of various sizes, so that one may be fitted to any ordinary size glass or cup.
From the front edge and ends 2 3 of the plate depend arms 5 6. On the lower end of the arm 6 is a slide 7, and in this slide 7 is fitted a sliding arm 8, with a foot 9. The foot 9 turns in and fits under the bottom of the glass or cup. The sliding arm is secured in position by means of a thumb-nut 10.
From the rear edge and ends 2 3 ofthe plate 1 extend arms 11 and 12, which curve around concentric with the top of the glass, and on the extreme ends of each of the said arms 11 and 12 are clutches 13 and 11, which fit over the rim of the glass.
From the extreme end of the arm 11 is a dependent arm 15, having a slide 16, and working in said slide is a slide-arm 1'7, havinga foot 18, which fits under the bottom of the glass. Said slide-arm 17 is secured in the slide 16 by means of a thumb-screw similar to the thumb-screw or arm 6.
On the inner face of each of the arms and at the end thereof may be secured a soft pad 19 to keep the end of the metal from scratching the glass or cup.
It will be seen that the arms 6 and 8 and and 17 are made adjustable by means of the slides 7 and 16, so that the protector may be secured to a glass or cup of any ordinary length, and the arms 11 and 12 may be bent to accommodate themselves to the periphery of any ordinary glass or cup, all of the arms being made of malleable material. The plate 1, however, may be made of any suitable material, and the arms may be of the same material and integral with the plate and may be secured to it by any mechanical means.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 1. The combination of the plate 1, having the recess 4; arms 5, and 6, secured to the front edge and either end of the plate 1; arms 11 and 12, secured to the rear edge and either end of said plate and extending around to the rear part of the glass, clutches 13 and 14, secured to the rear ends of the arms l1, l2; slides 7 and 16, secured to the lower ends of the arms 6 and 15 slide-arms 8 and 17, provided with feet 9 and 18, working in said slides, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the plate 1, having the recess 4:; arms 5 and 6, secured to the front edge and either end of the plate 1; arms 11 and 12, secured to the rear edge and either end of said plate and extending around to the rear part of the glass; clutches 13 and 14, securedlto the rear ends of the arms 11, 12; slides 7 ahdlfi, secured to the lower ends of the arms 6 and 15; slide-arms 8 and 17, provided with feet 9 and 18, working in said slides; thumb screw 10, working through slides 7 and 16, and securing slide-arms 8 and 17in position, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. HAYGOOD.
