Be it known that I, EDUARD ZAMBUsKv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Leisenring, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Bedsteads, of which the following is a specifica tion.

My invention relates to bedsteads made entirely of metal, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of bedsteads of Vthis class whereby4 they are more easily' knocked down or taken apart for packing and transportation and whereby they are rendered strong and rigid when set up and durable and effective in use.

lVith these objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of a metallic bedstead, which will be fully described hereinafter and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In order to enable othersskilled in the art to which my invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which f Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bedstead constructed in accordance with my invention. Like numerals of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the different iigures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 10 indicates the headboard, l1 the footboard, and 12 and 13 the siderails of a bedstead.

The cross-pieces 19 and 2O are connected by rounds or spindles 23 and the crosspieces 18 and 19 by any'suitable ornamental metal-work to lill up the space and brace the headboard-in this instance the metal-work filling being shaped to. form the number 1897, although any desired combination of letters, igures, or ornamental shapes might be used. .Surmounted on crosspiece18 is an ornamental structure consisting of fiat metal bent to form any design desired.

The footboard. 11 is somewhat similar to the headboard 10 in construction, being composed of hollow posts 24 and 25, connected by cross-pieces 26 and 27, of piping, and an angular bed-piece 28, with a horizontal flange 29, said cross-pieces being connected by hollow spindles 30 and the upper cross-piece 26 being surmounted by suitable bent-metal ornamentalwork. Balls 3l and 32 surmount the posts.

The side rails 12 and 13'are composed of parallell pipes 32, 33, 34, and 35, connected byhollow spindles 36, and tothe under sides ofthepipesf33 and 35 and the upper sides of pipes32 and 34, near the ends thereof, are secured S-shaped brackets 37, 38, 39, and 40. The free ends of these brackets are vertically slotted, as at 41. The ends of the pipescomposing the side rails are provided with projecting plugs, as 42 43, which form one member of a bedstead-fastener, being adapted to enter vertical v slots 44 45 in theposts of the headboard and footboard. Each plug is provided in its under side witha notch to engage the metal of the posts at the bottom of slots 44 and 45. When the side rails have been secured to the head and foot posts, pivotal turn-buttons, as 46 47, secured in and projecting from the posts, pass through the slots in the S-shaped brackets, by means of which said brackets are rigidly secured to the posts. y

The side bed-pieces or angular `slat-sup ports are each composed of two sections, (marked 48, 49, 50, and 51,) pivotally connected at 52. To the section 49 are pivotally con- IOO nected folding sectional slats 53 and 54, and to the section 50 are pivotally connected similar folding sectional slats 55 and 56.

When in position, the side bed-pieces or Slat-supports have their ends resting on the horizontal flanges 22 and 29 of the angular bed-pieces 2l and 28 and secured thereon by screws or bolts 57, 5S, 59, and 60, and the side and end bed-pieces are stiffened by cornerbraces 61, 62, 63, and 64, secured by bolts or screws 66 67 68 69 70 7l 72, the screws or bolts 65, 68, 69, and 72 serving the additional purpose of securing S- shaped brackets 73, 74, 75, and 76 to the head and foot bed-pieces, the opposite ends of said brackets being bolted to the head-posts, as at 77. Brackets 7 8 and 79 depend from the central portion of the side pipes 33 and 35 and serve to support the said bed-pieces at the points 52, where their sections are pivotally connected.

The folding sectional slats 53, 54, 55, and 56 are pivoted to sections 49 and 50 by riveted pins 80 8l 82 83 and when stretched into operative position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, are secured to sections 43 and 52 by screws or bolts 84, 85, 86, and S7.

The construction of my improved bedstead will be readily understood from the foregoing description. When the bedstead is set up and it is desired to take it apart, the screws or bolts 66, 67, 70,- and 7l, which connect the corner- braces 6l, 62, 63, and 64 to the side bed-pieces, are removed, which will permit of the corner-braces being folded against the head and foot bed-pieces. The screws or bolts 84, 85, 86, and 87, which connect the slats to the side bed-pieces, are next removed, which will permit the Slat-sections to be folded upon each other and upon the horizontal flanges of the side bed-pieces. The screws 57, 58, 59, and 60, which connect the side bedpieces with the head and foot bed-pieces, are now l removed, which will allow of the side bed-pieces being removed and folded for packing ortransportation. The turn- buttons 46 and 47, which connect the upper and lower S-shaped brackets with the corner-posts, are now turned to vertical positions in line with the slots in the brackets, and,finally,the complete side rails,including the S-shaped brackets attached thereto, may be detached from the headboard and footboard by slightly raising the side rails to disengage the notches in the under sides of the projecting plugs 42 and 43 from the metal of the hollow cornerposts, and, finally, by withdrawing the plugs from the slots in the posts.

The simplicity, beauty, durability, and effecti'veness of my construction will be apparent from the foregoing description, and while I have illustrated and described what I consider the best means for carrying out my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the exact details of construction set forth, but hold that any slight variation therefrom, such as would suggest itself to the ordinary mechanic, would properly fall within the limit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. The combination in a bedstead, of hollow corner-posts, side rails, fastening means to secure the side rails to the corner-posts, S-shaped brackets secured at one end to the side rails and provided with vertical slots in the opposite ends, and turn-buttons pivoted in the posts and adapted to engage in the slots in the S-shaped brackets, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination in a bedstead of hollow posts having vertical slotsin their si des, hollow side rails connected together by vertical spindles, plugs projecting from each end of the hollow side rails to engage in the slots in the post-s, S-shaped brackets connected to the hollow side rails and having vertical slots in their free ends, and turn-buttons pivoted in the posts and adapted to engage in the slots in the brackets, substantially as described.

3. The combination in a bedstead, of head and foot bed-pieces or Slat-supports, side rails connecting the head and foot boards, side bedpieces or Slat-supports independent of the side rails, each comprising the two sections of about one-half the length of the bed, pivoted together at their center, resting at their ends upon the head and foot bed-pieces, folding sectional slats pivoted to the head-section of one side bed-piece and adapted to engage the head-section of the other side bed-piece when stretched, like slats pivoted to the footsection of the last-named side bed-piece and adaptedto be engaged with the foot-section of the first-named side bed-piece when stretched, substantially as described.

4. The combination in a bedstead, of head and foot bed-pieces forming rigid portions of the head and foot boards and provided with horizontal flanges, side rails connecting the head and foot boards, side bed-pieces or slatsupports independent of the side rails, supported at their ends upon the horizontal flanges of the head and foot bed-pieces, horizontal corner-braces pivoted to the side bedpieces near each end, vertically-arranged S- shaped brackets bolted to the inside of the corner-posts of the head and foot boards in line with the end bed-pieces or Slat-supports, and a bolt for each corner-brace, passed through the corner-brace, the horizontal fiange of the head and foot end pieces, and the upper inner ends of the S-shaped brackets, securing both the corner-braces and brackets to the horizontal flange of the head and foot end pieces, substantially as described.
