Be it known that I, HARRY C. CUsHING, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to various new and useful ilnprovements in golf-clubs.

My object is to provide a golf club or iron which shall be capable of effective operation in any ordinary lie on the fair green or putting green.

My improved golf-club is, in other words, capable of eective use as a cleek, mashie, lofter, or putter. To this end I construct a golf-club having an adjustable head, the inclination of which can be varied to form a good effective club of any desired type.

The invention relates particularly to improved means whereby the various positions of the head can be easily and readily secured and by which also the head will be held with entire rigidity in any position to which it maybe adjusted.

In order that my invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is' aperspective view of the'improved club or iron, showing the parts assembled; Fig. 2, a similar View showing the parts disassembled, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional view.

In all of the above views corresponding parts are represented by the same numerals of reference.

1 represents the shaft, having a collar 2 securely fastened toits lower end. The collar 2 is provided with a head 3, having a fiat face 4., said face being provided with a flat fanlike extension 5. The extension 5 is provided with a plurality of notches 6 6 6 of any desired number, preferably three.

7 represents the head of any suitable form,

-but preferably of the generally cleek or mashie shape shown, said head being provided with a iiat face 8, which sets tightly against the face 4. of the head 3, and with an integral extension 9, the face of which sets smoothly against the face of the extension 5 of said head. The extension 9` is formed with a lug 10, adapted to seat within any one of the recesses 6. The head 7 is formed also with an integral screw-threaded shank 11, with which engages a nut 12, having a iinger-piece 13, the parts being so proportioned that when the lug 10 is in engagement with any one of the recesses 6 the finger-piece 13 will extend substantially parallel with the sleeve 2 of the club, so as to be entirely out of the way.

By reversing the rotation of the nut 12, so as to release the head 7, the lug 10 may be engaged with any one of the recesses 6 and held rigidly in that position by again tightening the screw 12. When the lug 10 is in one of the recesses, the face of the head 7 will extend substantially parallel with the shaft 1 and the club will constitute an eective cleek or putter. When the lug 10 is in engagement with the middle recess, the face of the head 7 will be given a slight inclination, so that the club will constitute an effective mashie or mid-iron. When the lug 10 is in engagement with the remaining notch, the face of the head will be given a very considerable inclination, so that the club will constitute an eective lofter.

I find in practice that a club constructed in accordance with my invention possesses great rigidity and that effective and accurate play will be permitted by its use.

I am aware that before my invention adjustable golf-clubs have been suggested employing separate heads the angle of which is adapted to be changed at will, said heads having tapered extremities engaging a tapered bore at the bottom of the shaft-socket and being held in engagement therewith by a suitable device, such as a nut, and I there= fore do not make any claim which would include such a construction.

-Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
