Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER B. SHILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented `new and useful Improvements in Syringe-Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nozzles for use on syringes; and the object is to provide a device by the use of whichthe patient need not be disturbed in order to remove the contents of the bowels.
Another object is to produce a device that may be inserted into the rectum with a minimum amount of discomfort to the patient.
The invention is more, fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my nozzle. Fig. Qis asectional View through line XX, Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 indicates the body of the nozzle, which is formed with a hose connection 2 at its rear end.
The numeral 3 indicates a longitudinal central passage running the full length of the nozzle. At one side of the nozzle-body I form an inlet-nipple 4, having a central passage 5, which leads to a circular chamber 6 in the body of the nozzle. This chamber 6 surrounds the .passage 3 and is separated therefrom by a Wall 3a.
The numeral 7 indicates a number of small longitudinal passages leading from the chamber 6 to the front end of the body. These passages are substantially parallel with the central passage 3.
The front end of the nozzle is slightly reduced at 8, and a cap 9 is secured thereon; This cap 9 is made, preferably, of a pliable, easily dssoluble, and lubricating material-- such, for instance, as a composition of wax or gelatin. This cap is pointed or rounded at its reduced extremity.
The inlet 4 is connected to the supply-tube 1()` and the outlet 2 is connected to the wastei tube 11.
The end 9 of the nozzle is inserted into the rectum and the supply of liquid entering the inlet 4 and passing through the chamber 6 and thence through the passages 7 to the end of the nozzle Will, in connection with the heat of the body, rapidly dissolve the destructible cap. 9 and the liquid will be free to enter the bowels and then pass out through the large central passage 2 and through the waste-tube 11, carrying with it the dissolved or broken up excrement. It is evident that this operation may be performed while the patient is resting quietly in bed, and it may be continued for any length of time, thus insuring a thorough cleansing without discommoding the patient.
The waste-tube may be connected, if desired, to a covered vessel, and thus all obnoxious odors will be avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention and its operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Asyringe-nozzle having an inlet-passage terminating in a plurality of smaller passages, a single outlet-passage and a removable dissoluble cap on the end thereof.4
2. A sy ringe-nozzle having an inlet-passage terminating in a plurality of smaller passages, a circumferential chamber from which said smaller passages lead, a single comparatively large outlet passage substantially parallel with said smaller passages, hose connections to said inlet and outlet passages and a removable, dissoluble tapered cap adapted to lit over the front end of said nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
