HAIR-STRAIGHTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 8, 1909.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909. Serial No. 482,063.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac K. Srinno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Okemah, in the county of Okfuskee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Straighteners, of which the following is a specific: tion.
This invention relates to a novel device for application to the hair in order to straighten the same by the application of heat thereto.
An object of this invention is to construct a device of this character which will do away with the necessity of providing a plurality of teeth for engagement with the hair which has a tendency to catch and break the same.
The invention further aims the provision of a hair straightening device which can be regulated as to the tension of the pressing irons thereon and one which will consequently give greater satisfaction than devices of this nature heretofore constructed and one which is of comparatively simple construction.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete implement and Fig. 2 is a perspective view in detail of the pressing irons in a modified form.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates an arm which is formed of wire and which is of straight formation, the arm 10 being coiled about itself at its rear extremity as at 11 to form a helix to produce a tension on an arm 12 which is extended forwardly therefrom in parallel with the arm 10 to diverge the same. The arm 12 is intermediately formed with a loop 13 which extends inwardly and engages about the intermediate portion of the arm 10 for the purpose of guiding the arm 10 in a reciprocatory movement with the operation of the device.
The arm 12 is extended forwardly from the loop 13 in parallel with the arm 10 and is flattened or otherwise angularly formed in cross-section to engage in a socket 141 integrally disposed upon the outer face of a pressing iron 15. The arm 10 is likewise flattened or formed angularly in cross-section to engage in a socket 16 carried by a pressing iron 17 which is adapted for coaction with the pressing iron 15.
At the rear portions of the arms 10 and 12 between the helix 11 and the loop 13 suitable hand grasps 18 are provided which form en larged portions upon the arms 10 and 12 to admit of the substantial grasping of the device by the operator.
The inner opposite faces of the pressing irons 15 and 17 are smoothed to present plain surfaces for engagement with the hair in order to prevent the tangling of the same or catching thereof with the parts of the irons 15 and 17, and the irons 15 and 17 are also rounded at their opposite corners to further this feature.
In the modification disclosed in the drawings the inner faces of the pressing irons 19 and 20 are provided with corrugated surfaces which may be employed, should it be found desirable, as the same are caused to grasp the hair and to frictionally engage the same as itis drawn therebetween.
In using this device the hair is preferably combed so as to disengage the same when the irons 15 and 17 are heated to a desired degree and are then applied to the hair, the same being compressed by means of the handle 18 and are drawn longitudinally of the hair in order to draw the same taut and to stretch and press the same.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A device as specified comprising an arm, a helix formed at the rear end of said arm, a second arm extended forwardly upon said helix in parallel with said first arm, a loop formed intermediately on said second arm and engaged with said first arm for guiding the same, a pair of pressing irons disposed upon the outer ends of said arms and handles disposed on said arm between the loop and said helix.
2, A device as specified comprising a portion of wire bent to form an arm, a helix at one end of said arm, a second arm extended in parallel to said first arm and a loop intermediately formed on said second arm and engaged with said first arm, a pair of press ing irons engaged upon the outer extremities of said helix and a pair of handles disposed rearwardly on said arms.

A hair straightening device comprising a portion oi wire bent to form an arm, a helix at one end of said arm, a second arin extended from said helix in parallel to said first arm, a loop formed iiiterinediately of said second arm and engaged with said first arm, a pair of handles disposed on said arms between said loop and said helix and a pair of rectangular plates having smooth inner opposite races rigidly disposed 111 registered I H ISAAC K.
