With the bottom 3 pretty much set, and the title race all but over, it's nice that there's only 6 points between 3rd and 10th position. Still plenty of teams with a lot to play for.

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlaispeaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We just had a meeting with the gaffer and he said 'well done guys but on to the next one'. It is ten more games in the Premier League but before that we have a Champions League game in Paris so we have to be ready.

"Now we are going to have a little rest because unfortunately we don't play at the weekend but then we have to be ready for Tuesday or Wednesday."

"Of course we would like to still be in the FA Cup but that is how it is. We have to focus on the competitions we are still in and we will focus on all three."

On his goal: "Lucho [Diaz] saw me on the dge of the box, made two steps back then I shot with my left. As a team we were compact, did what we had to, fought until the end and did not concede any goals and less chances than we thought. So we are happy."

On his form: "Yes better every week and that is what I want to do game by game. It is about the team. The team should be successful and then after that comes my point. Happy to assist, happy to score and happy to do the dirty work as well."

Liverpool's midfield are potentially the best in Europe right now and their ages are 22, 24 and 26... unreal.

  7. 'Still a long way to go'published at 23:05 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to TNT Sports on what point he will think about the title: "It is still a long way to go, ten games. In March we only play one Premier League game, then we have the cup final of course and an international break and then two big games against Paris Saint-Germain - so we are not focused on the long term.

"I know and the players know how difficult the Champions League game is going to be - they are in the same form as us, hardly lose. It is going to be a difficult task for both teams.

"Now the players have some days off and then we focus on PSG more than we do on the table in the Premier League."

On rest for the players: "Yes it is true that rest is good but also I would love to play because the likes of Elliot, Quansah, Chiesa would have been good for them to have a game, but for Virgil and Mo and these players it is very good."

On beating Newcastle before the League Cup final: "I don't think that means so much because I saw a different Newcastle tonight than a few months ago. I don't know if that is for a reason. Normally they press in a 4-5-1 and today they did a 4-4-2 and Isak and Joelinton were not there. We can expect something different in a few weeks."

The door was left open after the Villa game. Since then Liverpool have beaten Man City and Newcastle without conceding, Arsenal have played West Ham and Nottingham Forest without scoring. Explains why the title is probably staying in the North

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to TNT Sports: "Yes I did like what I saw, although there were things that we can improve as well. Maybe it was concentration because it was our fifth game in 15 days and I saw a few times us struggling a bit on the ball. That is something I am not used to with the players. But I thought after that we did really well, not only the players that started but those that came in as well."

On Dominik Szoboszlai: "He has been very, very important for us the whole season. This was not always seen. I think people talk about his goal again today, which they should because it was an important and good goal. But what I think helped the team even more than the goal was the way he won the second balls and won the ball back for us. He runs for two players. That deserves more credit than the goal but scoring is something you need to do as an attacking midfielder wearing the Liverpool shirt."

On winning 11 points from 15 in the recent period: "I have liked many things. After Everton and Aston Villa and the tough win against Wolves people started to doubt some things about our game but we reacted so well against Man City and all of a sudden it was very positive again.

"For all the mental challenges of people questioning us and then being positive about us the players kept very calm and did the things that they had to do. They made it as hard as possible for other teams to play against us and then normally our quality takes us over the line."

  11. 'We just focus on ourselves'published at 22:59 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlaispeaking to TNT Sports: "It is my second season so it has not been that long a time that I have had a chance to score twice in different games in a row. I am really happy to help the team, that is the most important. If I can score in more back to back games then I am happy but if we stay in first position in the league I am more happy.

On when they start thinking about the title: "After mathematically they [Arsenal] do not have any chance to get us. We're really happy that we are 13 points clear but we just focus on ourselves. We have Champions League coming up so we have to focus on that too. We are looking forward to staying at the top of the table."

On targeting three trophies: "When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything in my first season. So I don't like to talk about it. First we have a Champions League game to prepare and then a Premier League game and then we have a cup final against a really tough team. We have to be ready and focus first on Champions League and then the final after that."

  12. 'Two soft goals'published at 22:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reactsImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports:

"We played OK tonight, decent performance. Disappointed with goals we conceded. The first goal we don't track him into the box. We're fighting in the game after that to try and get the next goal. But then we do exactly the same thing. Two soft goals.

"Callum [Wilson] will always back himself and we back him to take the chances, they're not easy opportunities. He played well tonight, led the line and played well."

On having no shots on target: "Not good, can't sit there and say we planned that. We had opportunities, obviously you're not going to get an abundance of chances here so when you do you have to take them and we didn't do that tonight."

On lessons for cup final: "You always learn, sometimes you learn more in defeat than victory an two games against them this season we've been competitive but we have to perform better than today if we want to win the trophy.

"We need to find our best rhythm again, we have a few players out missing hopefully we can get them back. Big games, big moments in our season. We're still in both cups and we want to stay that way."

Lots of talk of Liverpool facing their most difficult spell and this being the chance for the chasers to close the gap. 7 points from 9 later and the gap wider. Just so so good

    Steve McManaman
Former Liverpool winger on TNT Sports

Liverpool have such a high level. They almost don't need the manager.

They know what jobs they need to do. Any player that comes on the pitch, they will put in those type of performances - they are that good at the moment.

They can rely on 15, 16, 17 players. Soon as someone enters the pitch the intensity doesn't stop, it rises and it goes again.

  15. 'This was how we have been winning games all season'published at 22:50 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

View from the stand: "As expected, even better than at the line but not something I prefer or want to do more often. But we still won the game.

"This was more like the way we've won the previous games. Difficult against Man City, that's separate. This was more like how we have been winning games all season.

"Most important thing that after Everton, Wolves and Villa people started to doubt us. Then you have to react to that. That's always easier because people start to question you but after City everyone was so positive then people start to get confident and complacent. Only the ones that want to achieve something, they find another gear to win the next game as well. Nice to have the compliments.

"We have had a lot of praise after City game but before that we had two draws and not the best game against Wolves so we were questioned. Nine out of 10 people say we're going to work harder, this was a different challenge because people were so positive after City, that needs a different kind of mental strength to then face a tough Newcastle side a few days later."

On rest this weekend: "Some players who need game time could have played but we have a couple of days off. Unfortunately we don't play in the FA Cup this weekend so we have a couple of days off and some players need that but others could've had a game."

Liverpool looked comfortable. They were on a canter really.

Incredibly efficient, the last minute closing down, even in Newcastle's penalty area. Their commitment, professionalism and game management was excellent.

They're in cruise control. Everyone else is falling away and helping them.

    They're unstoppable, they really are.

  17. 'Not clinical enough when those few chances did come'published at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpol 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We could have done better. I don't think it was a bad performance in any way but with the two goals we could have done much better. Both were passes into our box that we did not get tight enough to their midfielders which is frustrating really.

"Going the other way we had opportunities and moments but we were not clinical enough when those few chances did come our way. Maybe we were a bit lacking with the final ball too.

"It is always about our team and what we want to do but of course you have to try to control their big threats. I thought we did that pretty well in general but they are never a team that you can fully control with the pace and quality they have on the counter attack especially, that can be devastating. But in the main I think we defended pretty well."

On Alexander Isak's injury: "He's got a groin problem. We hope it is not too serious. Today it was touch and go a to whether he would play but he just did not feel 100% right so we did not want to take any risks with him."

On Callum Wilson: "Naturally I think there is going to be an element of that [rustiness] in his performances because he has not had the rhythm that regular football brings. But he will back himself to score, he always does. He led the line well and can be pleased with his performance. "

On the League Cup final: "It is out of my mnd at the moment. There are lessons to learn and I am sure there will be loads of stuff to look at when we review it properly. All focus was on today's game and trying to win."

    On Liverpool's performance...

You have seen a team that is mentally strong enough and everyone is working together.

The mentality, the commitment, the work-rate - they know what they need to do.

You can see a team which has belief.

  20. 'We are a little bit tired'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister speaking to TNT Sports: "I think the desire to win trophies [is driving us on]. We know that this season we maybe have the opportunity to win some, so we are really happy to work really hard and hopefully we can keep on going.

On his goal: "We didn't start the second half as we wanted. But as you say it was nice to score. I like to get into these positions but the ball does not come sometimes, but today Mo played the ball so I was really happy to score.

On having 7 days to rest: "We need it. Definitely. We are a little bit tired. This week it will be nice to have some days off and to get some rest."
