There probably wasn’t any chance of Kremer losing his rotation spot this spring anyway, and it’s certainly not happening now that Grayson Rodriguez is bound for the IL. Still, Kremer has something to prove after finishing with a 92 ERA+ last season, and he’s given up 12 earned runs and six homers in 12 innings during Grapefruit League play.
  • BAL Shortstop #2
Both sessions went “extremely well” according to Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. Henderson is doing his best to be ready to roll on Opening Day, but he’s still recovering from an intercostal strain that has sidelined him for the majority of the spring season. There’s a little more risk with Henderson than some of the other potential early picks, but still an awful lot of reward that goes with it.
  • BAL First Baseman #6
With the wall getting drawn back in some, the hope is that Mountcastle will resume pulling more flies in the air this year, something he got away from because the changes at Camden Yards made it really difficult to hit homers to left. Today’s homer, though, was a 363-foot shot to right-center. We’d be looking at Mountcastle as a reliable 30-homer guy right now if the Orioles had never touched their dimensions or if they had traded him back then. As is, the potential is still there, but if he doesn’t get off to a strong start, he could be reduced to more of a platoon role as the year goes on.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #49
Suárez was roughed up in his first two starts this spring, but the last two have gone quite a bit better, bringing his ERA down to 7.50. With Grayson Rodríguez down, the fifth spot in the Orioles rotation is expected to go to either Suárez or Cade Povich. Suárez probably has the edge after doing a nice job last year, and since he’s out of options, he’ll be on the team either way.
  • BAL Shortstop #3
Mateo had done a “full slate” of defensive drills on Monday and progressed to batting practice on the field on Tuesday. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Mateo was “progressing extremely well,” and Mateo is still holding out hope that he can be ready for Opening Day. He will need to get in spring training games soon if there is any hope of that happening.
  • BAL Shortstop #2
Henderson hasn’t played since February 27 while dealing with an intercostal strain, but the Orioles are holding out hope that he can make it back in time for Opening Day. Tuesday was the first day that Henderson was cleared to swing a bat and begin his hitting progression. “He did some cage stuff. That went extremely well,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “He’ll start some defensive stuff tomorrow, light ground balls. Just the first day of progressing.” We’ll have to see how Henderson’s progression continues in the coming weeks.
  • BAL Second Baseman #7
Holliday filled in at shortstop for an injured Gunnar Henderson (intercostal), who remains without an official return timetable at the moment. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters prior to Monday’s contest that the 21-year-old former top prospect is getting some additional work at shortstop in the event that Henderson isn’t ready for Opening Day. He’s batting .296 (8-for-27) with one homer and three steals this spring in Grapefruit League play.
  • BAL Catcher #72
Basallo’s no-doubter to right-center field left his bat at 111.3 mph and traveled 403 feet, according to Statcast. The 20-year-old burgeoning slugger, who checked in as the 21st-ranked prospect (107th overall) in Rotoworld’s latest dynasty rankings update, could make his big-league debut later this summer after launching 19 round-trippers last year in the upper minors. He’s probably going to move off catcher once he reaches the majors, but there’s enough raw power to envision him making a four-category impact if he reaches his ceiling.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #74
Bautista told reporters afterwards that he’s feeling better with every outing this spring before adding that he’s still regaining command and velocity, while also getting a feel for his new cutter. The hard-throwing 29-year-old stopper will be a top-10 closer off the board in fantasy drafts this spring, but he’s still working to re-capture his previously elite form in the final stages of his return from Tommy John surgery. It’s unclear whether he’ll be ready to roll on Opening Day, but the fact he’s made a handful of Grapefruit League appearances already is extremely encouraging.
  • BAL Shortstop #2
It’s been Jackson Holliday filling in at shortstop during Henderson’s ongoing absence just in case Baltimore’s franchise cornerstone isn’t ready for Opening Day. Hyde added that there isn’t an exact timetable for Henderson to return to game action as he recovers from a mild intercostal strain. It’s too early for fantasy managers to panic, but the lingering injury concern should drop Henderson to the back-half of the first round in all drafts for the remainder of the spring.
