Officers have closed a number of roads and footpaths leading to the landmark in the city centre, with forensic officers at the scene.

With no marked footpaths to the summit, it requires using hands and scrambling skills to reach the top.

Stormont officials have commissioned consultants to help address an "optical illusion" along a Belfast footpath that has caused pedestrians to trip and fall.

They were last seen in the early hours of 7 January, when they crossed the Victoria Bridge and turned right onto a footpath next to the river heading towards Aberdeen Boat Club.

"No one is going to object to widening the footpath on a ring road where you are not competing with other interests," he said.
