Yle News articles will be opened for comments as part of a trial scheduled to last until the end of 2023. Readers can engage in the issues of the day directly on the Yle News website using their Yle ID, which can be created by clicking this link and following the prompts.
"Yle wants to hear more from our audience, and commenting using the Yle ID is a great way to do that," said Marko Krapu, the Executive Producer of Yle's special news units.
"We have scaled back commenting on Facebook due to the resources required to manage discussions there, so we are happy that we're now able to offer similar opportunities on Yle's own platform."
Yle ID
Users will need to be logged in using an Yle ID to comment. The process is available in English here, and offers additional features and options for personalising Yle services.
Yle has announced plans to make Yle ID compulsory for users wishing to access Yle Areena content via the Yle Areena app.
The move is part of a trend to get users to register to access public services media content that has already been seen in the UK, Denmark and other European countries. Yle's Director of Strategy, Marit af Björkesten, says there are clear benefits to consumers.
"If you sign in you will get to pick up where you left off [when watching content on Yle Areena] for example, and you will get better recommendations," said af Björkesten.
"You are able to add your favourites, get alerts, you can take part in discussions and quizzes and so on."
Moderating comments on Yle's own platform also avoids issues with third-party platforms' moderation policies.
