Long-distance runner Mustafe Muuse has been named Turkunian of the Year 2024 following a public poll where he secured 3,796 votes.

Representing Turun Urheiluliitto, Muuse made headlines in 2024 by winning the Finnish Cross Country Championship gold and setting new personal records. Beyond his athletic achievements, Muuse has publicly championed the importance of equality and inclusion, encouraging young people to believe in their dreams.

At Finland's gala for sports awards in January, Muuse was also honoured as the Role Model of the Year, delivering a moving acceptance speech that received thunderous applause.

Voters highlighted Muuse's inspiring example and advocacy for young Finns, regardless of their background.

"Many candidates had impressive merits, but Muuse is a role model with a capital 'R'. In addition to his sporting success, he speaks out on important issues and works for the benefit of Finnish youth, no matter their background," one voter explained.

Muuse was born in Turku and is the son of Somali immigrants.

Turku’s mayor, Minna Arve (NCP), presented Muuse with a trophy made from Kakola granite, a piece of Turku's historical Market Square. Arve praised Muuse's contributions to promoting equality and inclusion.

"Muuse is an exceptional role model and an inspiring voice for many. His story shows how perseverance and belief in your goals can take you far. He embodies Turku’' sense of community and care, reminding us how individual actions can impact the entire community," Arve said.

In his acceptance speech, Muuse thanked those who voted for him.

"It's heartwarming that people have supported me and that my story has touched them," he said.

He also expressed gratitude to Turku's leadership for their efforts to create a better, more active city. He described Turku as a safe harbour to which it is always nice to return.

It is fitting that the award was given to a distance runner, since the sport has been part of Turku's identity for the past century as it was Finnish Olympic hero and running legend Paavo Nurmi's hometown. Many city landmarks are named after Nurmi, as well as Turku's annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon and Paavo Nurmi Games.

Tight title race

The competition saw Veronica Verho, a social media influencer and media personality who recently returned to Turku, take second place with 3,633 votes. Verho is known for highlighting Turku positively in her work.

In third place was Hannu Aaltonen, manager of Kupittaa’s Citymarket, who received 2,338 votes. Aaltonen has gained national recognition through creative campaigns, including promoting the city’s famous piispanmunkki pastries, Turku's take on the Berliner donut.

A record 21,226 votes were cast in this year's competition. The battle for the top spot was close, with the difference between Muuse and Verho being just over 100 votes during the final week.
