Abstract
418,616. Valves; cylinders. BONFA, A., 608, Umbilo Road, Durban, Natal, South Africa. Sept. 26, 1933, No. 26424. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] In a four - stroke engine, a port 9 serving for both inlet and exhaust, and an auxiliary exhaust port 8 are controlled by a piston valve 7 surrounded by a sleeve valve 6 provided with packing rings 22, 23 arranged so as to be disposed above and below the combined port 9 during compression and explosion. The sleeve valve is formed with ports 13, 14 cooperating with the cylinder ports 8, 9, and has at the other side ports 15, 16 and 17 corresponding to an auxiliary exhaust port 10, inlet port 11, and main exhaust port 12. The piston valve is formed with passages 18, 19 and 20 serving respectively for auxiliary exhaust, inlet, and main exhaust. When the piston uncovers port 8, exhaust first takes place therethrough, and afterwards through port 9. The sleeve valve is formed with an extension 25 to shut off the auxiliary exhaust 10 from the crank case. The two valves are worked by rods 27, 28 attached as shown to the valves and worked by eccentrics set at 90‹ to each other. The invention is particularly applicable to engines having pistons with a varying stroke, as described in Specifications 346,592, 372,544, and 421,266.
