Abstract
492,277. Shrinking fabrics. BROOKES, N. E. (Cluett, Peabody, & Co., Inc.) March 16, 1937, No. 7681. [Class 42 (i)] In apparatus for shrinking fabrics by the use of a rubber &c. band which is first bent say round a roller 15, and the fabric W applied to its convex surface and then bent, say round a roller 17, so that the said surface assumes a concave shape and contracts at the same time shrinking the fabric, the rubber surface is initially tensioned so that even in its contracted state it is not under compression. Several ways of obtaining this initial tension are described, e.g. the band may be made with the rubber 12 inside the inextensible backing 11 and then turned inside out, the rubber may be stretched over the ring 11 ; the rubber band may be stretched over two rollers 25, 26, Fig. 12, and the ring material 11 applied inside the band ; the rubber may be applied to a slack fabric 11w, Fig. 16, which when in use is stretched to its full extent. A free section of the band would take the shape shown in Fig. 3. Specifications 400,950 and 402,087 are referred to.
