Abstract
In the manufacture of ceramic bodies by moulding non-plastic ingredients coated with a clay slip, the green strength of the composition is increased by treatment before moulding, with a flocculating agent for the clay. Suitable flocculants are acids or salts of calcium, magnesium, aluminium or other polyvalent metals. According to an example, 90 parts of fused alumina, 10 parts of refractory bonding clay, 0.01 parts of sodium silicate as a deflocculant, and 5 parts of water, are mixed for five minutes, 0.01 parts of acetic acid are added and the mixing is continued for a further five minutes.
