Abstract

In a modification of the method of coating a metallic surface as described and claimed in the parent Specification, the temperature of the surface and the pressure of the vapour of the carbonyl of tungsten, chromium or molybdenum are selected so that the carbide of the metal is deposited instead of the metal. Carbon monoxide, with or without hydrogen, may be passed over the metal surface with the carbonyl. In an example a plate .0022 inch thick consisting of 95 per cent. molybdenum carbide and 5 per cent. uncombined molybdenum may be obtained by passing molybdenum carbonyl and hydrogen over the surface at 370 DEG C. at a total gaseous pressure of 0.1 mm. of mercury.
