Abstract
Iron powder, suitable for agglomeration in the cold, is made by decomposing iron formate by heat in a neutral or reducing atmosphere and, simultaneously or subsequently, submitting the products of the decomposition to a very far-reaching reduction by means of a reducing gas at a temperature between 500 DEG C. and 750 DEG C. The Specification states that a compression of 5-10 tons per sq. cm. produces goods with a density of about 7 gms. per c.c., with a Brinell figure of 130 and only about 10 per cent voids. The reducing atmosphere for the decomposition may be nitrogen or a mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen resulting from the decomposition and used under a partial vacuum, whilst the reducing gas for the reduction may be hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, obtained by decomposing ammonia, the reduction of the decomposition products being down to about 1 per cent of oxygen. The decomposition may be effected at 325 DEG C. when it precedes the reduction, and the Specification contains examples of the times and rates of flow of reducing gas necessary for the reduction. The powder may be used for making cores of induction coils, or it may be used alone or mixed with other metallic powders, with or without a binding and insulating agent, for the manufacture of articles such as gears or bearings.
