662,097. Reciprocating pumps. WILTON ROW EXTENSIONS, Ltd., and EADIE, R. W. June 2, 1950 [June 2, 1949]. No. 14822/49: Class 102 (i). In a reciprocating pump, a number of pump cylinders are arranged around, and parallel to, the driving shaft 2 that carries a cam 5 that gradually moves the pistons 9 during the suction stroke but has a shoulder to permit springs 10 to make a sharp delivery stroke. The pistons 9 are stepped to form pumping chambers 18 and have axial bores 17 connected to radial bores 16. During the latter part of the suction stroke, the pumping chamber is filled through these bores and during the early part of the delivery stroke, liquid is returned through the bores until the radial bores 16 are closed by the smaller part of the cylinder when liquid is delivered to one of the outlets 15; the return flow in the early part of the delivery stroke assists to clean a filter in the pump suction. The cam 5 has a step 6 on the other side that is engaged by a spring-pressed plunger 3 carried by the shaft 2 so that the drive is transmitted to the cam when the shaft 2 is rotating in one direction only. The pump may have a single cylinder.
