Abstract
710,176. Signs. HARMAN PLASTICS & ENGINEERING. Ltd., and HARMAN, H. E. May 2, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No.. 18777/50. Class 3(2) An edge illuminated sign comprises a lamp box 3 and one or more sheets 5 of transparent material such as glass or synthetic resin, opposite edges of which are polished, and having lettering or a design engraved or otherwise formed on at least one surface thereof, part at least of the or one of the sheets being bent so that the lettering or design is illuminated by way of both said polished edges from the lamp box, while when two or more such bent sheets are provided the sheets are rendered opaque to light transmitted therethrough to such extent as to prevent the lettering or design upon one bent sheet being seen through another bent sheet. The lamp box 3 is opaque and the edges of each sheet 5 enter slots in the box. Both edges may be illuminated by the same colour light or by different colours. The sheets 5 may be of any desired shape and may be used in conjunction with a flat transparent sheet which has one edge entering a slot in the lamp box. When a single bent sheet is used its two surfaces may be clear so that the lettering or design is seen from both sides or it may have a coloured transparent backing sheet. When two or more sheets are used each is backed by an opaque sheet or has one surface sandblasted.
