713,737. Light-diffusing elements. ELTON, E. G. Dec. 5, 1951 [Sept. 5, 1950], No. 21861/50. Class 75 (2) [Also in Group VIII] A light-diffusing lantern front or shade is formed by one or more sheets 10, 11 of resinbonded matted or woven glass fibres arranged on a transparent or translucent base member 12 so as to provide a number of areas having different light transmissive properties. As shown the glass-fibre sheets 10, 11 may be provided with cut-out patterns and superposed so that the patterns partially overlap. The superposed sheets 10, 11 may be sandwiched between two transparent or translucent sheets of glass or rigid plastic 12, 13, sealed together by a rubber or like gasket 14. Various geometric patterns may be stamped out of the glass-fibre sheets, and the sheets may be of different colours. In forming the sheets, a glass-fibre matting is supported on a smooth base and bonded by spraying with a suitable organic resin, which may contain a colouring pigment, the formed sheet having a thickness of about 0.020 inches.
