Abstract
A process for reducing the nicotine content of dry tobacco in bulk form comprises the steps of forcing therethrough a current of anhydrous hydrogen choloride with air, followed by a scavenging current of air or other gas which does not react chemically with the tobacco or compounds contained therein and then by a current of steam. The current of hydrogen chloride and air is passed through the dry tobacco for 2-10 minutes at a temperature between 50 DEG and 90 DEG F. The tobacco is then aerated using a current of dry air for 5-15 minutes to remove any remaining hydrogen chloride after which it is subjected to a current of steam, preferably at atmospheric pressure to vaporize the nicotine hydrochloride. The tobacco is then dried.
