UNITED STATES PATENT OEETQE.
HUGH L. BEDFORD, OF BAILEY, TENNESSEE.
KITCHEN UTENSIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,070,'dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed June 22, 1897- To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be' it known that I, HUGH L. BEDFORD, a citizen of the United States,residing at Bailey, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen Utensils; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a combination kitchen-tool; and it consists in its novel construction and the combination of its several parts hereinafter set out in, this specification and the claims hereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig.. 1.
My invention is described as follows:
A represents the body of my invention, having parts thereof cut away, leaving the openings 1, 2, 3, and 4 for the purpose of making the body light and at the same time ornamenting it. The lip 5 is a stove-top lifter, and it has in its front end a notch 6, which makes it also a tack-puller. The body A is provided near its front end with two feet 7 7, which serve as a fulcrum wh en the implement The lower jaw 8 is provided with teeth 9 to the end of the mouth. The lip 5 is smooth on its front face and is intended to brace the wall of the pan 10, while the flange 11 is grasped between the lower jaw 8 and the upper jaw 12. The upper`jaw12` is also provided with teeth 13. In the handle of my tool is a slot 13%. The upper ljaw 12 is fulcrumed in the handle near its center in said slot on a bolt 14. Its extreme rear lever end 15 is U shaped and straddles a bracing-section 15 in the handle, which is cast or molded integral with the handle in making the same. The said jaw 12 is held shut by means of a spring 16, one end of which is securely fastened in the head of the implement, while 'its spring end impinges lagainst the lever endV of the jaw'12.
In the rear or handle end of the tool is a groove 13%-, and in said groove is a corkscrew 17, pivoted on a bolt 18, and around this bolt and integral with the corkscrew isa spiral Serial No. 641,818. (No model.)
spring 19, its end 2O extending along the bottom of the groove and acting as a spring, in conjunction with the coil 19, to hold the corkscrew down in the groove.
In the eXtreme end of the handle A is hinged a can-opener 21, the forked end of which Yshuts down in the groove 13% and is held down by the pointed end of the corkscrew 17. As a further means of holding the corkscrew and can-opener in the groove 13% the handleA is provided with perforations 22, in which is inserted a spring-pin 23.
On one side of the handle and immediately at its end is a tack-hammer 24.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters lPatent, is-
1. The handle A, provided with the slot 13% and groove 13%; lip 5, having the notch 6; feet 7; jaw S, having teeth 9; jaw 12,having teeth 13, said jaw 12, fulcrumed in the slot 13%, by the bolt 14, and having the U-bend 15, adapted to straddle the bracing part 15'; spring 16, one end secured in the head of the implement and its free end impinging against the lever end of the jaw 12, holding it closed; corkscrew 17 having the spiral-spring coil 19, and spring end 20, pivoted in the groove 13%, by the pin 18, the free end of the corkvscrew 17, adapted to hold down the free end of the can-opener; can-opener 21, hinged in the groove and in the rear end of the handle, its free end adapted to be held down by the free end of the corkscrew 17; hammer 24, raised at the rear end and on one side of the handle A, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The handle A, provided with the slot 13% and groove 13%; lip 5, having the notch 6;
feet 7; jaw 8, having teeth 9; jaw 12, having teeth 13, said jaw 12, fulcrumed in the slot 13%,y by the bolt 14, and having the U-bend 15, adapted to straddle the bracing part 15'; spring 16, one end secured in the head of the implement and its free end impin ging against the lever end of the jaw 12, holding it closed; corkscrew 17 having the spiral-spring coil 19, and spring end 20, pivoted in the groove 13%, by the pin 18, the free end of the corkscrew 17, adapted to hold down the free end of the can-opener; can-opener 21, hinged in ICO In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
