Abstract

706,313. Saw tooth generating circuits; pulse radar. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. April 1, 1949 [April 6, 1948], No. 8914/49. Classes 40 (6) and 40 (7) In a sawtooth generator of the Miller type in which a capacitor 4 connected between the anode and grid of a valve is periodically charged and discharged, a grid leak 5, the charging voltage 6' and a source of negative grid bias 8', 8" are connected in series-between the grid and cathode and the charging voltage is periodically rendered operative by opening a switch bridging the series combination of charging voltage source and grid leak. The bias may be adjusted such that the valve is normally conducting so that the anode voltage step which usually occurs at the start of the long flank of the output wave is avoided and so that both positive and negative going output waves may be produced. The charging voltage may be sinusoidal so that the amplitudes of successive sawtooth waves follow a sine curve, Fig. 6, two of such generators with the sine waves in quadrature being suitable for producing the deflection voltages in a plan position indicator. The switch comprises reversely arranged diodes periodically rendered conducting by pulses applied to their series resistors 16, 17. A resistor 20 causes a sharp change in anode voltage to occur at the commencement of the long flank of the output wave and may be adjusted so that the anode voltage at start of the long flank is equal to the average value of the wave and the output from the coupling capacitor 13 at this point in the wave is zero. The adjustment is independent of output voltage amplitude.
